What Is Shiatsu?

SHIATSU originated in Japan. Treatments are primarily based on restoring the body’s energetic balance.

A person’s energetic potential is known as “Qi” and is believed to flow evenly along defined pathways (meridians) beneath the skin. These pathways nourish and sustain the body’s organs. A treatment plan and diagnosis are developed according to the principles of TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine), as explained below.

Shiatsu

A treatment lasts around 40 to 50 minutes (less for children) and feels simply wonderful.

The basis for a diagnosis according to TCM principles consists of symptoms and abdominal and back assessments. The client’s outward appearance is assessed according to TCM criteria, including smell, posture, tone of voice and movement. The tongue is also regarded as a reflection of the energetic state and is assessed for size, shape, colour, texture and coating. The assessment also takes into account appetite, digestion, sleep and sensitivity to temperature.

Taken together, these factors provide the basis for a diagnosisthat guides further treatment and helps develop a strategy . This naturally results in individual treatment tailored to each person .

TCM models often make it possible to identify complaints at a stage when they cannot yet be detected using technical methods. SHIATSU is therefore a wonderful preventive measure for everyone, young or old.

Treatment includes manually stimulating acupuncture points and meridians using finger pressure (SHI = finger, ATSU = pressure) as well as pressure from the heels of the hands, elbows and feet, while you lie comfortably clothed on a futon . It may also include warming treatments with moxa, dietary recommendations, cupping in some cases, and suggestions for exercises you can do independently or lifestyle changes. Over the course of treatment (5 to 10 sessions), I often offer guidance on improving your lifestyle to help you understand how to actively support your body’s health yourself.

I first encountered Far Eastern healing methods in 1992. Their effects, which are often still difficult to explain scientifically, quickly impressed me through many positive experiences.
